6,000lbs UPS Through a Window?

We added a new 500kVA UPS to our PEER 1 / ServerBeach data center in Los Angeles back on June 30th. The combination of being in a heritage building and trying to bring in a 6,000lbs (74″h x 32″d x 86″w) UPS unit prove to be quite a feat. A crane had to be driven in and a permit required to block off two lanes. The window on the fourth floor had to be carefully removed so as not to damage the heritage structure and then restored back in original condition. The entire process took 15 building engineers and staff six hours and two attempts to finally get it in. Here are some pictures of the event:

  1. Wow, what an operations. I would have liked to seen the photo of the transfer from the crane to the block and tackle…I am sure there was some anal-tension at that point, if you know what I mean. I hope they mopped the floor underneath that puppy before they put it on the floor…that thing is not going anywhere anytime soon.
